Blizzard’s latest team shooter, Overwatch, is gearing up for release earlier than expected. While the game is still in closed beta, many have questions about the game and how high-level players are approaching the three main modes.

Overwatch is something of an outlier in the current generation of eSports; it doesn’t have a competitive mode set in place yet. It doesn’t even have a match-making system or ranked ladder for players looking to test their skills against their peers.

And yet, the game has attracted the attention of high-profile eSports organizations. North American eSports team Cloud 9 recently signed team Googleme, a group composed of former World of Warcraft competitive players and Quake players, to form their first Overwatch team. European organization Fnatic has thrown their hat into the ring as well.

While it would be unfair to call the scene as a full eSport and the first wave of high-level players as pros, the Overwatch community has taken it upon themselves to really craft a competitive experience through trial and error. It’s a clear message to any game developer: eSports are not born, they are made by a community.
