EVO 2016: Evolution heads to Japan
During the final day of Evolution 2016, the largest fighting game event in the world, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada and community figurehead Mark “MarkMan” Julio announced the next step for the long-running tournament series: Evolution Japan.
The tournament, originally announced in 2010, was set to be held in the May of 2011 but was indefinitely postponed due to the Tohoku Earthquakes that happened earlier that year. Full details of the event are set to be announced at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
Evolution or EVO is an annual international fighting game tournament series that started in 1996 as ‘The Battle of the Bay’. Multiple titles are featured each year as thousands of players travel out to compete with many coming from Asian countries such as Japan and Korea. That being said, it’s a logical move to host a large event in the either of the two countries like what EVO’s team is doing.
