Worlds 2016 Prize Pool Doubles To More Than $ 4,000,000

Riot, for the past few years, considered Crowdfunding as a way to increase the pool during the esteemed Worlds every October but never pushed through with it. Many speculations behind their refusal to use Crowdfunding usually are along the lines of the difficulty in its implementation and supervision.

One article to explain said actions by Riot would be Emily Gera’s “Riot Games isn’t worried about Valve’s $10M Dota 2 prize pool, here’s why”.

As written by Gera from Polygon, “The company’s decision to continue offering a comparatively smaller prize pool of roughly $2 million each year is in part a way to future proof the professional gaming branch of League of Legends, says Yeh” (2014)But, for the first time, Riot has decided to implement Crowdfunding thru the purchase of Championship Zed and the Championship ward which was made available for purchase alongside the other Championship skins. The prize pool for the Worlds before this was at 2,000,000 USD but with just over 3 weeks left until the final showdown at the Staple center in Los Angeles, fans all went full out support for their teams and raised the bar to a whopping 4,145,000 USD! Move over Biofrost, we have a new candidate for ‘Support of the Year’.

We may not be there physically to support the teams but with these purchases we make, we slowly build up the pool, as well as the passion inside of these teams.
