UST.KANGKONG crowned first-ever UPGG Impetus Champions
University of the Philippines’ Gaming Guild recently held Impetus, an intercollegiate esports league for the eight UAAP schools. This year’s DoTA 2 tournament, which boasts a P130,000 prize pool, saw the Impetus championship brought to España as UST.Kangkong handily beat ADMU.Saltstack in the finals. The main event was held at the High Grounds Cafe powered by TNC.
UST were the favorites going in to the finals, as they breezed through the main event. They sweeped all their Best-of-3 matches against De La Salle University’s The Fellowship and Far Eastern University’s Team EZ.
AdMU.Saltstack also sweeped National University’s ICHILL, then proceeded to win against University of the East’s No Pressure 2-1. AdMU.Saltstack then dropped to the lower bracket after losing in the semifinals against UST.Kangkong.
The lower bracket saw AdMU.Saltstack face against UP’s Impetoinks for a spot in the finals. Both teams were neck and neck, but AdMU’s shoto impressed on Lina with an amazing 16/2/5 performance to win against their Katipunan rivals.
España vs. Katipunan
The finals were a Best-of-5 which pitted ADMU.Saltstack against UST.Kangkong for the title of the first ever Impetus champion.
Game 1 was a show of UST.Kangkong’s dominance which showed all throughout the event. Their strong drafting and early game led them to a 16-4 13:41 victory, the fastest in the tournament.
The early game was the same for Game 2, with UST getting early picks and getting to objectives much faster. AdMU quickly answered however, turning the tides in small skirmishes and big teamfights, wiping the whole UST squad at one point, in hopes of a comeback. But their efforts fell flat and UST was too much to overcome in a 55-minute, 47-35 bloodbath game. UST were now 1 win away from victory.
With their backs against the wall, Game 3 was a must-win for AdMU. However, after 32 minutes and 55 kills across both teams, UST complete the sweep and take home the Impetus 2017 Championship and P25,000.
