The International 2017 Main Event Day 1 Recap
The Main Event kicked off today at the Key Arena in Seattle.
Game 1: invictus Gaming vs Team Liquid
Group A first seed Team Liquid chose Group B’s 4th seed invictus Gaming, thinking it would be the easiest choice. They were quickly proven wrong.
Game 1 was absolutely textbook from iG as they played a CC and damage heavy comp with Night Stalker, Lycan, Batrider, Ancient Apparition, Alchemist. It was a high risk, greedy pick phase but it payed off huge. Multiple ganks focused on the mid and bottom lanes helped propel iG to an early lead, and with the Alchemist, held a steady net worth lead all throughout the game.
Game 2, however, was far from textbook. The early game was relatively calmer and slower than Game 1, and started to lean in iG’s favor, who got the Alchemist and Sand King again. But by the late game things started going crazy. Matumbaman’s Ursa started getting picks with his Blink Dagger, and Liquid started grouping up to take objectives. In a siege at the bottom lane tier 3 tower Liquid come up huge with the help of gh’s KoTL and his sustain. This sets up a crazy sequence of more team fights and the two teams go back and forth.
The final nail in the coffin came in the form of a huge teamfight in the mid lane which resulted in Liquid getting the team wipe out and iG calling GG.
iG and TL head into Game 3 both with comps excellent in teamfights. Both teams go hard early but iG lead in kills 8-5 at the 15 minute mark. Well-timed combos from the Lina and Earth Spirit help build iG’s lead. Paired with Liquid’s inability to get key skills off in time, Game 3 started looking done. iG snowballed their lead from there and it was just too much for TL.
iG proceed to Upper Bracket Round 2 and will face winner of Newbee vs Evil Geniuses.
Team Liquid drop to Lower Bracket and will face winner of Execration vs Team Secret.
Newbee vs Evil Geniuses
