Cloud9, G2 Secure First Place Ahead of Spring Playoffs
Cloud9 and G2 Esports sit atop their region’s standings ahead of the Spring playoffs starting March 20, 2021.
Following one of the closest splits of the League of Legends Championship Series, Cloud9 with their offseason pick-up of Luka “Perkz” Perković have narrowly secured first place ahead of Team SoloMid and Team Liquid.
Earlier in the season, C9 struggled in the region’s first-ever LCS Lock-In as the team was still building synergy with Perkz and rookie top laner Ibrahim “Fudge” Allami. As the split went on, they were able to put it together to secure first place with a 13-5 record.
Although, it is worth noting that the team has yet to prove themselves against top contenders such as Team Liquid, who they have yet to take down, and TSM in the Mid-Season Showdown. The Mid-Season Showdown is the league’s qualifying tournament for the Mid-Season Invitational.
The Mid-Season Showdown begins on March 20 and will feature best-of-fives with a double elimination format. The following teams will be competing in the qualifying tournament:
- Cloud9 (13-5)
- Team SoloMid (12-6)
- Team Liquid (12-6)
- 100 Thieves (11-7)
- Dignitas (11-7)
- Evil Geniuses (10-8)
Meanwhile, G2 Esports have been “business as usual” dominating the League of Legends European Championship with Martin “Rekkles” Larsson coming to their aid in the bottom lane. Despite having the same win-loss record as Rogue (14-4), G2 are given the head-to-head advantage given their 2-0 record over the team.
G2 have looked just as strong in the 2021 season even as Perkz left in the offseason. Now, they hope to find further success internationally with Rekkles filling in his shoes. From the outside, it looks as if Europe has G2 Esports and Rogue standing head and shoulders above the rest of the competition.
The LEC 2021 Spring Playoffs will begin on March 26, 2021 and follows the format of the Mid-Season Showdown. The following teams will be competing in the playoffs:
- G2 Esports (14-4)
- Rogue (14-4)
- MAD Lions (10-8)
- Schalke 04 (9-9)
- Fnatic (9-9)
- SK Gaming (8-10)
