Video game company Atlus has been a consistent presence in the JRPG genre with prominent series such as Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. With the release of Shin Megami Tensei V today, a whole 5 years since a main game from the series was released, a lot of excitement is justified.

The core game mechanic of the Shin Megami Tensei series involves the player encountering numerous demons, and sometimes enlisting their help a la Pokémon but more suited to adult tastes. These demons are often based on real life folklore and myths, and in SMTV one of our very own makes her entrance.

In this commentary provided by Masayuki Doi, a Character Designer and Demon Designer for Atlus, he expresses the team’s desire to have a “horror” character which the Manananggal fulfills perfectly. He also added that with the Manananggal’s design, the world of SMT has broadened past “cute” and “cool”.
