Ever queued in rank and your worst possible nightmare came true? An instalocking Yoru appeared! Now, what do you do? Lucky for you, (NAVI) and Mehmet Yağız “cNed” İpek’s match against BBL Esports served a lesson for all of us tilted teammates.

During the holy week, NAVI’s miraculous win with CNed’s Yoru gave us casuals some insight on how to win despite having someone on your team picking the worst agent in the game.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened.

Accidents Happen

NAVI was already up by one map in their series against BBL, having won Ascent 13-10. During that game, NAVI already showcased an unconventional agent pick with Dmitry “SUYGETSU” Ilyushin’s Sage, an agent that wasn’t run by EMEA on the map in ages and was actually the first time she was picked for the said map during the VALORANT Champions Tour 2023: EMEA League.

FEATURED STORIES

As they were already experimental in the series, they continued to spice it up with CNed on Yoru for Game 2 on Fracture. CNed was initially hovering on Jett during the agent selection phase before eventually locking in on Yoru.

When Yoru was locked in, BBL looked amused, NAVI coach Erik “d00mbr0s” Sandgren seemed troubled, and CNed himself was caught giggling by the cameras.

According to Andrey “Shao” Kiprsky, the Yoru pick was Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov’s idea. This was further supported by the English casters who were talking during the agent selection about how ANGE1 was nagging CNed to pick Yoru and noted how the former Jett main is now flexible.

“In just one day, Ange1 can come up with some idea. For example, Yoru on Fracture and we just do it because we trust our captain,” Shao revealed in their post-match interview

However, according to NAVI’s assistant coach Oliwer “LATEKS” Fahlander, CNED actually picked the wrong agent on Fracture but the team was able to persevere. After all, NAVI won Fracture 13-8.

Regardless of whether or not the Yoru pick was intentional, it was definitely an interesting match and it serves as a lesson that a Yoru teammate is not an autolose situation.

Different Way of Playing Yoru

Only one team is famous for making the Japanese agent work, and it’s none other than our favorite W gamers: Paper Rex.

Paper Rex uses Yoru as a combo maker with another initiator, usually pairing Yoru’s utilities with either a Breah or Skye, usually both for Paper Rex on Bind.

Interestingly, that’s not how NAVI and CNed utilized the teleporting agent. Yoru was used a bit differently as he wasn’t exactly integral to NAVI’s executes, rather it did involve CNed but not because of Yoru. With a composition of Yoru (CNed), Cypher (ANGE1), Omen (Shao), Viper (SUYGETSU), and Fade (Pontus “Zyppan” Eek), NAVI can’t simply replicate how Paper Rex uses the agent.

Despite that, CNed still managed to top frag with a 20/12/3 KDA on a 254 ACS. Maybe all you really need to make Yoru work is a really good player in the first place.

How To Use Yoru on Both Sides of the Map

CNed’s debut on Yoru didn’t start pretty at all. In fact, he got first blooded at the arcade by Ali Osman “AsLanM4shadoW ” Balta during the opening pistol round. Luckily, NAVI was able to salvage the round by making it a four-versus-two situation and wiping BBL to win the round and, eventually, the game and series.

During NAVI’s attacking half, CNed’s Yoru had simple tasks:

  • Flank and kill (by Gatecrashing into unexpected places)
  • Plant spike if everyone else can’t
  • Become the perfect bait
  • Get out of tricky situations or scout enemies through the Dimensional Drift

As a duelist, CNed relied more on his god-given aim rather than Yoru’s utilities. Furthermore, as a renowned fragger, Cned’s fragging capabilities had enough gravity to distract BBL to be constantly worrying about his position on the map. Thus, he became the perfect bait to get traded by his teammates. However, given his KDA on the map, he also mowed a lot of their opponents successfully which furthered warranted attention toward him. After all, with an aim like CNed’s, you can always leave it up to the team to clean up the scraps and pick up rounds if ever he dies.

Now on their defensive half, CNed’s duties were as follows:

  • Push to actively gather enemy map positions and escape with Gatecrash
  • Use Fakeout to get more information during fights
    • When enemies shoot the decoy then their positions were confirmed
    • If the decoy survives, the enemies can’t see you or they aren’t looking from that angle
  • Spam Blindside to delay enemies from pushing toward a site

CNed’s defensive role was a bit different compared to his previous performances with a Jett.

For starters, he put his trust in his teammates to win rounds for the team. With teammates like SUYGETSU (who recorded an Ace during a retake on Round 16) and ANGE1 popping off on multiple rounds, CNed had the luxury to let his team get more kills than him.

Besides that, he also used more rifles during this game. CNed was known to be a good Jett on an Operator. But with Yoru, CNed was using more rifles, specifically buying a Phantom when able. In fact, CNed only used the Operator during the last round, taking the round’s first blood on Doğukan “QutionerX” Dural and recording two kills by the end of it.

Hopefully, every Yoru instalocker learned a thing or two about how CNed used the agent. As for the teams unfortunate enough to meet Yorus in the wild, you’ll just have to suck it up and play with whatever the team’s composition is, while also hoping your Yoru dreams to be like CNed (and can actually back it up).
