Malaysian Dota 2 Veteran Dies at 24

Malaysian Dota 2 Veteran, Raymond Wong “Sharky” Kie Yong, was found dead in his bedroom at around 8 p.m. (GMT+8), Monday, Dec. 22, according to Dolly Yang’s Facebook post.

According to the post, which was a conversation between Yang and Yong’s sister, Yang immediately called Sharky’s phone upon learning the news of the latter’s death. This was after a certain Facebook post by Eddy Lee on Sharky’s Facebook announcing the death of his “beloved cousin.”

“According to her sister, he came back very late in the morning,” Yang wrote. “Then he went to sleep. After that, he never came out from the room. And his sister discovered his death around 8 p.m.”

Notably, hours before Sharky’s death, he played under the banner of G-Guard against Mineski Dota in the MOL Dota 2 championship, where the latter emerged victorious.

In a text message by Sharky’s sister to Dolly, she said that Sharky’s wake will be held tonight.

“My youngest brother’s ceremony will be tonight, 8:30 p.m. (GMT+8) at Jalan 229 Section 51A, Kampung Tunku Petaling Jaya,” Sharky’s sister wrote to Dolly.

Sharky’s cause of death is still unknown as of writing. eSports Inquirer is still awaiting a statement from Sharky’s family.

Young star

The 24-year-old Malaysian player is undoubtedly a veteran in the Southeast Asia (SEA) scene. Sharky played under various organizations such as, MUFC, Orange eSports, Johnny’s Revenge, G-Guard and others.

Sharky was part of MUFC for years, which bagged gold in the World Championship Games (WCG) 2011 Championship and got invited to The International (TI) 2 in 2012. In the latter part of 2013, the said team disbanded and the players went on their separate ways. Sharky then joined one of the highly acclaimed Malaysian teams, Orange eSports. After which, he also became part of Johnny’s Revenge for quite some time.

Recently, Sharky played in team G-Guard as a support player, together with some of his longtime teammates, Litt Binn “WinteR” Chan, Daniel Wei ” TooFuckingGood” Khit Wong, Woi Cheong “ling” Sim and Loh “dabeliuteef” Liong.

Beloved

Dota 2 gamers, professional players, shout casters and other personalities locally and internationally expressed their sympathy and messages for Sharky.

“Raymond always took care of me when he was around… Life is too short.. I will always remember what you did for me,” Sharky’s longtime team mate WinteR tweeted.

Sharky’s former team, Orange eSports, said in a Facebook post that Sharky was a “good lieutenant to Captain Winter”.

“All of us at Orange eSports would like to express our sincere condolences to the Wong family,” Orange eSports wrote. “His friendly smile will always be missed.”

“Sharky was always [an] insanely nice person! Life is very unfair :(,” Danil “Dendi” Ishutin, Natus Vincere’s (Na’Vi) position 2 (mid-lane player), tweeted.

Toby “TobiWan” Dawson, joinDOTA’s shout caster, said in a tweet that Sharky is “one of the most enthuasiastic” Dota 2 players.

UPDATE: In a Facebook post Florence Wong, Sharky’s sister, said that “overfatigue and heart failure” caused the latter’s death.

“We have known the cause of Raymond’s death. [It] is due to [overfatigue] and then heart failure. So for now please let him rest in peace and we shall remember all his kindness, bubbly and cheerful characters in our heart,” Florence Wong wrote.
