(UPDATE: Added rankings for Super Smash Brothers Wii U, Ultra Street Fighter IV and Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire)

Last Saturday, Imperium eSports Bar and Video Game Lounge held its first Super Smash Brothes Wii U Tournament. With 26 players participating, it was one of the biggest tournaments this year for the Nintendo game.

For the past year, Imperium has held monthly tournaments for Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Blazblue Chronophantasma and Guilty Gear Xrd. Now, the eSports organization and bar took its first steps towards newer ground, hosting its first Smash Tournament alongside Ultra Street Fighter IV and Pokemon.

Tournament organizer Franz “D3v” Co discusses the event in further.

FEATURED STORIES

“This is the first time we are incorporating Smash Brothers in our monthly tournaments. We also included Pokemon, our first non-fighting game in the lineup. This is the start of our plan to include a ‘Nintenday’ in conjunction with our other regular events.”

D3v was impressed at the player turnout for the tournament, considering that this is Imperium’s debut in Smash Bros.

“It was a very good turnout. Usually we’d have a few players join in during the first iteration. But this is full force. It’s a packed room.”

After over six hours of nonstop action, the grand finals was a battle between the North and South communities, as Juan Miguel “Champo” Champo of Rumpus Room and Enzo “Stats” Prats of Playbook battled it out for the gold. Stats ran rampant as Shiek stayed in the Winner’s Bracket throughout the tournament with strong technical skill and aggressiveness. On the other side, Champo made a solid run after starting in Loser’s Bracket using Shulk, a character considered as low to mid tier by the international community. His game knowledge combined with playing an unconventional character bought him a ticket to the championship.

During the Grand Finals, Champo managed to reset the bracket after being down 2-0 in a best-of-five. While Stats put up a great fight, Sheik’s speed was not enough to hold down Shulk’s versatility. Going up to the fifth and last game, one small mistake from Stats cost him the championship, crowning Champo the first champion of Imperium’s Smash tournament.

Asking what was the key for Smash, or any fighting game in particular, to continue its growth as it gains more and more attention, D3v said community involvement is vital.

“Having a community and being part of it is important. You get better because you get to play against stronger players, which inspires you to improve. Both the community and corporate side must work together.

Also, passion is infectious.”
