You are Immortal: Hearthstone Shows Undying Care for a Fan
The past few weeks were pretty hyped up and eventful for Hearthstone. Different cards were revealed, through public vote, from the initial announcement to gaming events such as Gamescom. It was also revealed through individual streamers as well.
Now, Hearthstone’s newest expansion, The Grand Tournament (TGT) is now live!
Two weeks after the initial announcement of the expansion, a vote was opened between two Epic-rarity cards: for Warlock and Paladin respectively.
Another new #TGT card is revealed. Vote now to decide which card will be unveiled next! https://t.co/ioKHVOtioM pic.twitter.com/8zYYFBUvYY
FEATURED STORIES— Hearthstone (@PlayHearthstone) August 7, 2015
For three days, the public squared off against each other on which card to vote for. Hearthstone’s Senior Game Designer Ben Brode endorsed the left one.
This vote is crazy on both sides but I am *definitely* voting left. If you accidentally vote right i guess it's ok. https://t.co/f1waaLyvNE

Three days passed and the winning card was announced. It was the left one, a Warlock-class epic named Dreadsteed. Dreadsteed is an Epic rarity card that costs 4 mana with 1 point for both attack and health with the effect:
Deathrattle: Summon a Dreadsteed.
A Deathrattle is an in-game Hearthstone mechanic that triggers when the said card is destroyed. Once this card dies, it will summon a Dreadsteed, again, so the newly summoned Dreadsteed will have the same text as well. Deathrattle: Summon a Dreadsteed.
Whoa! This guy is immortal!
Yeah, it seems so. Blizzard is known for showing that Hearthstone is really a fun game and they try to emphasize that with these kind of interestingly crazy cards.
Nothing seemed really special right? Just another card revealed out of the 132-card set expansion. No big deal! Moving on.
That’s what I thought too! Until Hearthpwn released the features of the latest patch such as the new sounds, game board, animated cards and flavor texts. Flavor texts are another of the developer’s take on throwing in some fun in-game, something like Cenarius’ below:
Yes, he’s a demigod. No, he doesn’t need to wear a shirt.
Now, here is where this story becomes special.
Not like the joke on Cenarius showing off his abs, it is not easy to get what is being pointed out by Dreadsteed.
Dreadsteed‘s flavor text reads:
Crescendo himself summoned this steed, riding it to victory in the Grand Tournament. Wherever he rides, an army of riders ride behind him, supporting the legendary champion.
Who is Crescendo?
One would have thought that Crescendo would be someone from the Warcraft World. But that’s not the case. He is a Hearthstone player and a Reddit user. His post last April is still one of the top rated on the Hearthstone subreddit.
The subject post features Crescendo bidding his farewell to the community and to the game he loved the most. It’s not because of too much saltiness, but due to a very bad mannered opponent known as cancer. It had already grown too strong and he would need to commit a lot of time in the hospital to be treated.
His full post reads as below.
Even if you are not a Hearthstone player, or a gamer at all, you can read from his post the journey he went through from being a simple individual enjoying a game he loves to play. He gets to experience all the bad manners the opponents are giving. But still, Hearthstone is a game that he enjoyed. In turn, he invested his precious time as he battles the toughest opponent in his/her life right now.
Having someone enjoy your game might be the best feeling a game developer can get. So to show their gratitude, Blizzard created this card. It is solely inspired by a fan that have been with them all along.
Where is Crescendo Now?
After the reddit post about Dreadsteed’s flavor text, Crescendo submitted another post after five months of inactivity. Still overwhelmed by the response, he gave his thanks to everyone who gave him support.
Crescendo, with all of the army of riders supporting behind him has the chance to fully recover and triumph in The Grand Tournament! Even with a very tough battle, like cancer, one should not give up. Not until the last point of health is gone, you should push yourself to do your best on how you are going to play your turns.
You can still pray to RNGesus so that you can draw the card that you need. Maybe the next card you’ll draw is the last burst of damage you need to kill the opponent off.
Crescendo showed us that one should never give up on any battle. Blizzard showed with a simple gesture that they deeply care to each individual playing their game.
