Get Your Funnel Cakes Here! Chess Grandmaster Quotes Hearthstone Card on Live World Chess Championship Broadcast
At the 2016 FIDE World Chess Championship between Sergey Karjakin and Magnus Carlsen, Chess Grandmaster Peter Svidler dropped an unexpected Hearthstone nod while casting the five-hour long match.
Midway through the match, Jan Gustaffson, Svidler’s co-commentator, remarked that Karjakin thinks about cakes in order to stay focused.
Svidler’s well-timed response? “Funnel cakes, get your funnel cakes here,” a clear nod to the Refreshment Vendor card from Hearthstone.
The reference game didn’t end there for Svidler. When Gustaffson said he didn’t get the reference, Svidler quoted the Yugi-Oh: The Abridged Series by saying, “That’s because you don’t play children’s card games. And you probably shouldn’t start playing children’s card games suddenly.”
Svidler, who is ranked 21st in the world, is an avid Hearthstone fan. In the past, he has challenged fellow chess players to games of Hearthstone after discovering them in online chess platforms.
