Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines dominates GPL Finals
On April 16, the Garena Premier League came to an explosive conclusion at the Samsung Hall in SM Aura when Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines faced Thailand’s Ascension Gaming for the chance to represent the SEA region at Riot Games’ Mid Season Invitational. Teams from Vietnam and Thailand have ranked in the top of the GPL consistently in the past years, a trend that has continued to this year’s GPL.
The match was originally predicted to go all the way and end in a 3-2 victory for Gigabyte Marines, because top laner Stark and jungler Levi have not been tested in an international tournament until this GPL. Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines took the first game slowly, feeling out the weaknesses of Ascension Gaming, and winning the game handily. The weakness of Ascension Gaming in the early game was heavily exploited by the Marines in the second game, where the Vietnamese team won the game at 22 minutes, showing their dominance. The last game of the series saw Gigabyte Marines completely dominating Ascension Gaming once again, gaining leads in the early game and dominating Ascension Gaming, winning the last game in an impressive 18 minutes.
With their win, Vietnam’s Gigabyte Marines secured the third straight GPL championship for Vietnam, and will be heading to Riot Games’ Mid Season Invitational event in Brazil to represent Southeast Asia.
