The 8 Kinds of Dota 2 Bet Lords

Depending on who you’re talking to, betting can either be an exciting way to spice up match viewing or a horrible practice that’s ruining the industry. Whichever the case, betting has been a widely-accepted activity in the Dota 2 community. Now I’m not sure about other countries, but in the Philippines, people who enjoy betting on matches are often referred to as “bet lords”. Check out the eight kinds of bet lords you will meet in the uncertain world of Dota 2 gambling.

1. The Daredevil

The road of the daredevil bet lord is a prize-laden, but perilous one. You either instantly win a lot or lose everything. But that doesn’t seem to be a problem for this guy because he believes that high risks will reap high rewards. Life’s too short to be scared of losing your immortals and arcanas! Watch him bet his high value items on the team that everyone else is betting against. He firmly believes in the possibility of upsets because it doesn’t matter if you’re a previous International champion — you can’t win forever! Of course, this way of thinking is a double-edged sword in a game where anything goes, so best couple it with a positive attitude as well. If you’re one to rage at a loss, consider being the next guy in the list.

2. The Safe Player

The total opposite of the daredevil, the safe player believes in slow but sure returns. He doesn’t bet on the teams unless they’re highly likely to win and doesn’t bargain more than he can afford to lose. Yes, he takes risks, but only calculated ones. The safe player will consider betting a mix of rares, commons, immortals or arcanas if he can risk it. He earns a lot less than the daredevil, but at least he doesn’t lose as much.

3. The Commoner

He just wants to try betting and have new items. It doesn’t really matter how much he earns because anything higher than a common item is too precious to bet. Oftentimes, the commoner isn’t a hardcore bet lord. He probably enjoys having new things to find in his inventory or just loves his rares too much.

4. The Statsman

Data will never lie to you and can even guide you in the right direction if you know how to read it, and the statsman sure knows how. This guy will always check the information available to him before he makes his move. How stable is this team? Are they playing with a stand-in? How are they faring in this patch? Who has been drafting for them lately? The statsman follows the scene closely and checks if the odds are even worth betting at all. After all, why make a wild guess if you can make a sound decision based on facts?

5. The eSports Noob

He doesn’t know anything or care about teams, but he does care for the items. His knowledge of the scene is mostly limited to International champion teams and player personalities like Dendi and Mushi. He will take note of trending team names instead of players only to forget them the moment some other team becomes more dominant. His knowledge is based on previous betting results instead of a team’s actual playstyle. The eSports noob often locks his eyes on a statsman friend to help him make his decisions, but he much prefers the next guy on the list.

6. The Oracle

No, I don’t mean the hero. The oracle bet lord has amazing sense and luck; you won’t be surprised if he told you he can predict the future or that he’s married to lady luck. Of course, he suffers losses occasionally, but the bottom line here is that he wins more than he loses. And you don’t know how or why.

When he bets on the underdog, upsets strangely happen out of nowhere and winning streaks suddenly end. And, mind you, he’s not rigging the matches either. We’ve had enough of that, ladies and gentlemen. Perhaps he has a betting sense that tingles when it’s time to win some rares or maybe he just reads the scene that well. Whichever the case, he’s got this betting thing in the bag.

7. The Undecided

For someone who likes to bet a lot, this guy has no proper backbone to decide on his own. The undecided bet lord hangs around in online groups or cybercafes where he will constantly ask people about which teams they think will win. He probably already has his mind set on a certain team, but needs some sort of confirmation that he’s placing his apples in the right basket. After placing his bets, he will then proceed to once again ask everyone if he made the right decision. Doing this once in a while is fine but doing it all the time can be annoying. And it’s even more annoying if you become the next guy on the list.

8. The Vicious Loser

This is by far the person I hate most in the list. As soon as he loses his items, he will proceed to go to his favorite social networking site and insult the hell out of the losing team and sometimes even its manager. Worse, if he got advice from anyone at all, he’s going to blame that guy, too. The vicious loser can spew words so harsh and venomous to drive Viper and Venomancer to shame. Apparently, the phrase, “bet at your own risk” does not ring any bells in his head. In fact, he thinks losing his items is a legitimate reason to act like a spoiled child throwing tantrums because the dice rolled five instead of six. If you’re a vicious loser, I have three words for you: stop being one.
