LEC Stirs Controversy After Partnering With Saudi’s NEOM
The European League of Legends community has spoken out against the League of Legends European Championship after the league announced its partnership with Saudi Arabian project NEOM.
NEOM is an initiative by Saudi Arabia to develop smart cities in the Tabuk province. In response, the LEC community has scrutinized the league’s decision to partner with the Saudi-backed project.
LEC casters and staff have voiced out their concerns citing that the government of Saudi Arabia and its laws are not welcoming of the LGBT community. In Saudi, homosexuality is perceived as immoral and is punishable by law which includes capital punishment.
NEOM faced controversy last April when it was revealed that they were allegedly violating human rights by evicting tribe members of the Huwaitat tribe to push through with the smart city development.
The LEC’s partnership with the company comes amidst the league’s vocal support for the LGBT community with its change in logo in recent weeks.
