The first day of The International 11 playoffs saw Southeast Asian squad BOOM Esports face off against TI10 champions Team Spirit. The first round of lower bracket matches was played in a BO1 series, with losing teams bowing out of the tournament for good.
The magic of TI was on full display when BOOM pulled off the upset against the defending champions, much to the delight of the home crowd.

BOOM’s victory over Spirit means the Western European team loses their shot at a back-to-back championship. The contest was on equal footing early into the game but BOOM saw their opportunity to pull ahead after hitting their item timings and securing the first Aegis. BOOM methodically increased their advantage from then on and with the second Aegis secured 11 minutes later, there was little Spirit’s off-meta Lifestealer and Outworld Destroyer picks can do about the SEA team’s superior firepower. BOOM fielded a Shadow Fiend carry for Souliya “Jackky” Khoomphetsavong, who became an unstoppable force and recorded a 9/0/5 KDA.
Earlier this year, Team Spirit carry Illya “Yatoro” Mulyarchuk made waves after making a fruity comment on BOOM Esports. “BOOM Esports? Who are they? They don’t seem like good players to me. I feel like they are mediocre.” Yatoro’s Lifestealer was largely ineffective in the elimination match.
