Renowned American team Evil Genius (EG) caused  one of the biggest upsets in a Chinese Dota 2 tournament after eliminating a Western giant team — Team Secret — setting up yet another grand final against their Chinese rivals Sunday, Feb. 8.

EG defeated the favored Secret, 2-0, securing their ticket for a chance to win $3 million at the grand finals of Dota 2 Asia Championships (DAC) where their known rivals, the Chinese juggernaut team Vici Gaming (VG), awaits.

Dota 2 is a game wherein two teams, composed of five players each, face each other to destroy the opposing team’s main structure, the Ancient. This tournament, the Dota Asian Championship (DAC), is an undergoing tournament at Shanghai, China with a prize pool of over $3 million.

With Secret favored to win the series, EG had to play a more aggressive strategy to pull off a victory over them.

FEATURED STORIES

In game one, EG went for a push-oriented lineup which they maximized throughout the game. They took down the enemies’ towers at ease one by one and had the gold lead at their side early on. The coordination coming from the Americans were close to no mistakes as they gained momentum in the game finding pick-off after pick-off and winning clashes — which eventually led to Secret throwing the white towel.

In game two, Secret dominated the early to middle part of the game given their heroes were better in paper during those times. However, the Americans found their way in keeping up and holding into the match. EG created spaces for their star hero to get his much needed items to carry the team forward. Despite Secret’s early dominance, the game went toe-to-toe as EG contested every single clash they had. As the dust settled between the two teams, EG gained the upper hand, cruising to their victory at the 55-minute mark.

EG will face VG in a best-of-five grand finals at 2 p.m. today (GMT+8, Philippine Standard Time). This is the fourth grand final meet between EG and VG. The Chinese took away two titles from the Americans who earned the other one. They last met at the ESL New York Grand Finals where VG emerged victorious.
