Korean League of Legends Semi-Finals Are Locked and Loaded

April 11, 2017 eSports Inquirer

The top 4 teams that will be given a chance in the Playoffs to lay claim at the title of 2017 LCK Spring Split Champion are now locked.

The teams facing off are: SKT1, who previously secured the number one seed when they showed a dominating performance in the Regular Season; Samsung Galaxy (SSG) and KT Rolster (KT), who have succeeded in getting the 2nd and 3rd seed, respectively; and finally, to complete the powerhouse roster, MVP, who won the last slot against Afreeca Freecs (AF) in a tie breaker last Saturday, April 7, in a 2-0 victory.

New Tournament Layout

Starting this year, a new tournament layout was implemented that split the tournament into 2 parts: The Regular Season and the Playoffs.

The Regular Season consisted of a double-round-robin matching scheme which pitted all the teams against each other in best-of-three matches, having the chance to fight with every team twice. The four highest scoring teams in the Regular Season will have a chance to play for the championship in the Playoffs.

The Playoffs are where the Top 4 teams coming from the Regular Season duke it out for the right to claim the Championship Title.  The new system rewards the highest scoring team in the regular season with a bye that sends them directly into the championship. The new tournament scheme is laid as such that the 4th seed has to work their way up having to defeat the 3rd seat to advance into the semi-finals, which the 2nd seat got a bye into, and the winner of which will face the 1st seat in the finals.
