Street Fighter’s Daigo “The Beast” Umehara Donates Winnings To Scholarship Fund
We all know Daigo Umehara for his may achievements in the fighting game scene such as Evo Moment 37, or the moment where he literally parried all of Justin “EG | Jwong” Wong’s attacks at near death to clutch the championship out. The very moment, according to his opponent himself, may have saved the at-the-time dwindling fighting game scene from irrelevancy. All in all, in his decades long tenure in the scene, Daigo has won and done many feats that many all over the world will remember.
Today, Daigo added yet another title to his repertoire, but it isn’t anything related to playing games directly: philanthropist. Donating $60,000 of his winnings from his 2nd place finish at 2015’s iteration of the Capcom Cup, said money will go towards the EVO Scholarship Fund. The fund helps members of the fighting game scene finish college at Tisch School of the Arts’ New York University Game Center so they can have careers in game development.
That being said, this is an amazing and unexpected gift from the face of competitive Street Fighter. Will more professionals follow in his example? We’ll find out in the future.
