Gearing Up For The League’s First-Ever Two-Time Champion: MPL-PH S5 Playoffs Day 2 Recap
Marathon matches, headliner matchups, and hero plays abound as exciting Mobile Legends: Bang Bang action continued on the second day of the MPL-PH Season 5 Playoffs.
SGD Omega vs ONIC PH
Opening the day was an absolute marathon match. At 54 minutes, Game 1 was the longest game in MPL history, with Onic coming out on top. Game 2 was a complete turnaround, as SGD tied it up in just 10 minutes. In the end, Onic were able to save themselves from elimination and moved on to the next round, which they would play later in the day.
Blacklist International vs Execration
In the next elimination match, the power duo Z4pnu and Ch4knu go up against the double tank powerhouse Dex Star and Honda Beast. In Game 1, early picks led to a snowball on the side of Execration, and by the end, it was too late to stop Hate, who finished 6/0/9 on Ling. In Game 2, despite Blacklist’s strong early start, answering kills and objectives, their draft fell off and Execration were able to capitalize. With the quick 2-0, Execration were set to face Onic in the last match of the day.
Bren Esports vs Sunsparks
Back in the Upper Bracket, two former champion squads faced off. Sunsparks showed dominance in the first game, relying on strong teamplay and rotations. Jaypee’s signature Ling pick proved to be too strong, finishing 9/1/5 with a team-high 21% Damage Share. Despite a relatively low-kill Game 2, Sunsparks played the map very technically and carefully. This time, it was Greed who shone in the spotlight, finishing 5/1/6 with a 29% Damage Share on Selena. With the 2-0 win they grab the first slot to the Grand Finals. Bren dropped to the Lower Bracket where they would await the winner of the next match.
ONIC PH vs Execration
The last match of the day offered the final ticket to the semifinals. Early kills shot Onic to a lead in Game 1, with Execration able to answer a few. Despite a Lord steal by Hate, it came a little too late as Onic were far too ahead with a 9k gold lead. With three down and Wise’s monster Ling, Onic take two inhibitor turrets and minutes later, the game. In Game 2, Onic completely dominated Execration in a clean fashion, giving up only three kills and two turrets, while they had 13 kills and five turrets. They move on to the Lower Bracket Finals to face Bren Esports.
With the battlefield set, the MPL PH will see a two-time champion being crowned for the first time, as Bren Esports, formerly known as Aether Main, won the very first MPL PH season. Onic’s Fuzaken and Jay came from S4 Champion Sunsparks and S3 Champions ArkAngel. And of course, reigning champions Sunsparks will have a chance to defend their title at the MPL-PH Season 5 Grand Finals.
