RNG Surpass FPX to Qualify for MSI 2021
After a dominating 14-2 split, Royal Never Give Up take their rightful seat as the LPL Spring 2021 champions after taking down FunPlus Phoenix 3-1.
Considering their tough season in the past year, no one expected Royal Never Give Up to be as dominant as they were in Spring. With the loss of Jian “Uzi” Zi-Hao in the bottom lane, RNG’s upcomer Chen “GALA” Wei had a tough road ahead to prove himself.
But, as we’ve seen, RNG stood up to the challenge even as their former mid laner Li “Xiaohu” Yuan-Hao made a role swap to Top Lane for the season. The revitalized RNG stomped through the regular season only dropping games to JD Gaming and Bilibili Gaming.
In the playoffs, high expectations were on the rising squad. In their first match against FPX, they fell flat 0-3 to the former world champions and were relegated to the lower bracket with the community quick to calling them “overhyped”.
However, they showed up when it mattered as they took down Top Esports and EDward Gaming in back-to-back silver scrapes where they won out in Game 5 after Game 5. In the finals, RNG lost the first game which brought everyone back to their previous 3-0 blowout.
However, RNG showed that they had learned from the mistakes of their past winning three games straight to win the championship. In all their wins, Xiaohu shut down Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon giving him an abysmal 0/3/5 and 1/9/2 KDA in Games 3 and 4.
Xiaohu and Royal Never Give Up will be gracing the international stage once again following their last win in MSI 2018.
