The characters in question are Tyari the Traveler and Shomi the Dropboarder. Both characters are follower units from Riot’s card game Legends of Runeterra.
Tyari the Traveler has already been initially confirmed to be a transgender character in It Gets Better 2020 Global Summit’s discussion about Gaming and the Power of Progressive Storytelling.
Meanwhile, Shomi the Dropboarder is voiced by LGBTQ+ voice actor Ry Chase.
“Shomi was super fun to voice. I always love characters with a wry wit,” Chase stated. “It’s great getting to bring that kind of dynamic to life.”
Riot Games is known to be a great LGBTQ+ ally as two of their employee resource groups, Riot Alliance of Diverse Genders & Rainbow Rioters, are responsible for helping underrepresented employees and players feel safe, valued, and celebrated.
Recently, they celebrated pride month with in-game events for League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra, and Wild Rift.
They also feature other LGBTQ+ characters across multiple game titles such as Diana, Leona, Neeko, and Varus.
edit: Blitzcrank, Cho’Gath, Fiddlesticks, and Kindred have been removed from the list of Riot’s LGBTQ+ characters as the assumption of them being such is dehumanizing and offensive to some LGBTQ+ circles.
