Just a week after the release of the Magic Misadventures expansion, Legends of Runeterra has announced a hotfix that brings major nerfs to five cards that have been a little too oppressive in the current meta. The nerfs are as follows:

  • Poppy – Base Stats 3|3 > 2|3, Level Up 4|4 > 3|4
  • Yordle Explorer – Grant +1|+1 > Grant +1|+0
  • Gangplank – Base Stats 5|5 > 5|4, Level Up 6|6 > 6|5
  • God-Willow Seedling – Countdown 2 > Countdown 3
  • Kinkou Wayfinder – Summons two 1-cost units > Summons two different 1-cost units

The patch is inarguably headlined by the nerf to Poppy, who has now been subject to a total of three changes since her addition to the game in Beyond the Bandlewood. Reducing Poppy’s attack to a meager 2 effectively negates her synergy with champions such as Zed and Ziggs, which might keep the dominance of Rally Elusive and Yordle Burn decks in check.

Meanwhile, Yordle Explorer granted an immediate buff to Yordles as soon as they hit the board. The card was met with community backlash the moment it was revealed and developers promised adjustments if it was proven to be too powerful (spoiler: it was). Changing the buff it provides to simply a +1 to attack, while still being impactful, makes Yordle boards a little less resilient.

Gangplank has seen ladder success for a long time in Plunder Midrange and Poke City decks with Sejuani and Twisted Fate, respectively. Dropping a 5/5 with Overwhelm on curve usually signifies the end of the game right then and there as not a lot of decks have the tools to deal with it. The fact that Gangplank usually levels up to a 6/6 the following turn adds insult to injury; reducing his health by 1 makes him a little bit easier to remove.

God-Willow Seedling and Kinkou Wayfinder are among the many stars in Kennen-Ezreal decks that have dominated ladder play as of late. The additional countdown to Seedling, paired with the summon change to Wayfinder will mitigate the number of Kennens that swarm the board.

It is interesting to note that the top six decks on Mobalytics were all on the receiving end of today’s patch. With the nerfs now live, players can only hope the changes bring about a healthier meta to Runeterra during the holiday season.

The next Legends of Runeterra balance patch is scheduled to take place on January 5th.
