Lapu-Lapu City Kicks Off Kadaugan sa Mactan Festivities with Esports Tournaments
Lapu-Lapu City kicked off its Kadaugan sa Mactan festivities over the weekend with its fourth season of esports tournaments for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) and Call of Duty Mobile (CODM).
The games were hosted by the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Commission and were run for two days from April 2-3, 2022. The tournaments were done inside Hoops Dome, the city’s premier indoor sports arena.
“First of all, naa ang [esports] sa amuang book of events. Apil ang esports tungod kay kaybaw mi nga daghan sa mga kabatanunan sa Lapu-Lapu kay nahilig sa esports. (First of all, esports is part of our book of events. Esports was included because we knew that a lot of the youth in Lapu-Lapu were into esports),” Lapu-Lapu City sports commissioner Vince Chan Carungay. “Nagsugod ni tanan pag pandemic since dili allowed ang contact sports. Nangita mig pamaagi unsaon paglingaw sa mga kabatanunan. Hopefully, mapunan pa namo og laing mga esports [events suma sa] Crossfire and Dota (It all started due to the pandemic since contact sports weren’t allowed. We tried to find a way to keep the youth entertained. Hopefully, we can add more esports events in the future such as Crossfire and Dota),” Commissioner Carungay also revealed.
The MLBB tournament saw 32 participants which came from different barangays all over Lapu-Lapu City. Out of all the barangay representatives, Brgy. Pajo dominated the competition. As the crowd fervently cheered for their respective teams, Brgy. Pajo swept Brgy. Babag 3-0 in the best-0f-5 grand finals. The match between Brgy. Pajo and Brgy. Babag was considered an el clásico as the two teams have clashed before in Season 1 where the latter became the city’s first champions.
“Naglisod mi first game kay murag wa mi nagkasinabot pero [tungod] sa momentum nadaog mi (We had difficulties in the first game due to misunderstandings but we won thanks to our momentum),” Christian Greg “MASTER TANIX” Tan, the team’s MVP thanks to his marvelous Fanny and nimble Lancelot plays, revealed as to how they beat Brgy. Babag.
“Nindot kaayos pamati na nachampion mi balik (It’s a great feeling to become champions once more),” MASTER TANIX also remarked as he recalled being the champions back in Season 2.

Meanwhile, the CODM battle royale competition had an open registration and saw 25 teams that vied for the title. Team Pamugasay rose to the top as they accumulated a domineering 75 total kills from all five rounds which all featured different maps. They consistently finished near or at the top 3 for every round while they accumulated a bunch of kills every single time. Their most impressive performance came from the last round as John Loyd “Travonz” Lauglaug secured 11 kills which granted the team a large breathing room.
Together with Travonz, Team Pamugasay was composed of Jeremy “Imba” Mallorca, Evan “Kyuubi” Gawchua, Christian “Kairi” Oracion, and Miko “MicroNest“. The team took home PHP 15,000 for winning the tournament.
“Lipay kaayo mi kay pag Season 2 kay napildi mi [og nahug ra nga] second place rami. Nabawi namo among trono balik (We’re really happy as, back in Season 2, we lost and ended up in second place. We finally reclaimed our throne back),” Team Pamugasay team captain Imba revealed. “Pressured kaayo mi [mudaog] labi na [tungod] sa among mga kontra na mga lig-un kaayo (We were pressured to win most especially since our opponents were also strong),” he continued.
