The four-minute movie-like trailer was basically an exposition dump of what to expect in the new FF entry. The game is set in the realm of Valisthea and the game is centered around mothercrystals which multiple kingdoms seek to claim and control for themselves to enhance their own power. FF XVI revolves around two characters: Clive Rosefield and his younger brother Joshua, the latter being a Dominant (people who can summon other beings of great power called the Eikons a.k.a. the typical FF summons) of the Eikon Phoenix.
Prior to the trailer’s official release, a now-deleted article from IGN Southeast Asia actually hinted to fans of the then-upcoming FF XVI’s trailer release.
Square Enix plans to release Final Fantasy XVI sometime in the summer of 2023.
