The Pokémon Philippines Community will be hosting a gym challenge
Pokémon fans, rejoice! Your dreams of participating in a Pokémon gym challenge might finally come true, as the Pokémon Philippines community will be holding the first-ever Pokémon gym challenge this February. The challenge will play under the Pokémon Video Game Championship (VGC) Doubles rules and will be fully online.
“We just really love creating community events, especially for Pokémon. The ‘gym challenge’ concept is one of the most classic and core concepts of the games,” said Isaiah Mangundayao, one of the event’s organizers. Mangundayao is working with a team to organize the event, including several content creators who will act as gym leaders for the challenge. Most of the matches will be streamed, at the whim of the content creator/gym leader.
“We expect the event to attract new and experienced players alike. Newbies love gimmicky events, while experienced players like battling to improve their skills,” remarked Mangundayao. “We combined these two things into one event. We also planned this event to give exposure to local Pokémon content creators.”
Last December 10, 2022, VGC 2016 World Champion Wolfe “Wolfey” Glicke held a similar one-day, IRL event. Wolfey’s “Midtown Gym” had its participants play through a series of matches with other VGC staples like Aaron “Cybertron” Zheng and Aaron Taylor.
As of writing, 60 people have signed up since the registrations opened last January 4, which will be running until February 4. For more details on the event, visit the Pokémon Philippines Facebook group or drop a message on their Discord server.
