Led by the former OpTic Gaming superstar Jaccob “yay” Whiteaker, Cloud9 demolished Paper Rex in two games at Lotus and Pearl for their debut.
In Lotus, Cloud9 took the game away from Paper Rex — who picked the map for themselves to debut on the international stage — in a close yet intense matchup that resulted in a 13-8 scoreline. Despite the nerfs, Cloud9 put Yay on his signature Chamber where he recorded a 19/13/2 KDA and 255 ACS. Furthermore, C9 notably used Stingers on eco rounds which worked wonders despite the nerfs it received in a recent patch.
Come Game 2, Cloud9 absolutely decimated the Pacific team on Pearl, 13-4. This time around, Yay had an unconventional pick as he took Sage for the map. Cloud9 continued their momentum heading into the second game as they took ten of the first twelve rounds as attackers, eventually ending the game in just seventeen rounds of action.
With their win, Cloud9 eliminated Paper Rex from the tournament in São Paulo, Brazil. They will be facing DRX (who took out BBL Esports earlier in the day) in their next matchup this Sunday, February 19, 2023.
