A mobile version game of a game-within-a-game of a sequel of a game within another game, is in the works.

While its origins may be convoluted, the decision makes perfect sense to Drodo Studio, the developer behind the hit Dota 2 custom map Auto Chess, which announced plans to release a mobile version of Auto Chess for both iOS and Android.

Drodo Studio earlier hinted that they were working on a mobile game on March 1, after they posted a teaser image on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Auto Chess is a custom-made Dota 2 map created by Drodo Studio where players battle against each other with a variety of Dota units on a chessboard-style arena. As of writing, Auto Chess has 6,453,291 subscribers registered on its Steam Workshop page.

As a custom map of an existing game, Auto Chess can only be played by opening Dota 2 on the Steam client, Valve Corporation’s digital distribution platform. The upcoming mobile version will be developed by Drodo Studio and publisher Dragonest. The mobile game will be independent from Valve Inc. and will use original characters instead of their Dota 2 and Blizzard Entertainment counterparts.

Observers were quick to point out that the spin-off mobile game is the latest addition to a chain of games that have gained enough popularity to become standalone games in their own right.

The mobile version of “Auto Chess” is based on its Dota 2 custom map of the same name. Dota 2 is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) type of game, published and developed by Valve Inc. as a standalone sequel to the original Dota, which started life as one of the most popular custom maps for another game, Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne.

Pre-registration for the game is now available but no release date has been announced. JB
