Streamer Sundays: Dexie Diaz, Tier One’s Youngest Talent
Three million followers, one of the youngest talents in Tier One Entertainment and a rising mainstream actress. This is Dexie Diaz, and at 16 years old, she’s just getting started.
Dexie started her career in streaming playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in 2018. She was only fourteen then. A year passed, and Dexie continued to grow her stream and joined EVOS Lynx to win tournaments such as Season 3 of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Female League.
Today, Dexie is a well-known name in the community standing alongside her co-talents in Tier One Entertainment. Her fun-loving persona and charisma has helped her win over the hearts of her viewers, despite being as young as she is.
Get to know Dexie Diaz in Esports Inquirer’s feature series Streamer Sundays, where we get to talk to up-and-coming and veteran streamers and see how they‘re doing in the present day.
How are you doing, Dexie?
“Medyo nahihirapan din kasi siguro…di ako makalabas which is marami akong work na dapat pwedeng puntahan and marami pong, siyempre, gala and everything.”
[pullquote]Despite the difficulties, work has always come first for Dexie as she mentioned that she streams everyday from as early as 8 A.M. to around 1 P.M. in the afternoon.[/pullquote]
She added, “Now na Tier One po ako, siyempre mas gusto ko na kasama ko yung mga kapwa streamers and everyone. Sana po maget to know silang lahat at makabond and siyempre, for more work.”
Congratulations on joining Tier One Entertainment earlier on in the year! What made you join T1 to begin with?
“Hmmm…paano ko ba iexplain? Siguro nung una po kasi, super duper idol ko si Alodia. Di na po ako magsisinungaling dun…Gusto ko pong makawork yung kilala ko ring streamers at naging idol ko since bata pa ako at kung saan ako mag-grogrow mas gusto ko dun pumunta.”
How has your routine changed since the pandemic started?
“Noon…after [streaming], punta na po agad ako sa work sa High Grounds, sa office namin, interview then photoshoot. Kung sabihin ko kasi dati palagi ako nagvlovlog, [pero] ngayon mahirap na magvlog sa labas.”
When we asked her about her early streaming schedule, Dexie said that she had already memorized the names of her viewers who stay up for her stream then sleep right after.
[pullquote]Since the pandemic, Dexie said her life as a streamer basically has stayed the same saying “Actually, yes, nagtaka ako…siguro nung nagkaroon ng pandemic so naglockdown, dumami po viewers ko. I guess tuloy lang yung life ko…stream pa rin all the way.”[/pullquote]
Dexie streams around four hours of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang a day, followed by a PC game of her choice for around one to two hours. These days, because of the pandemic, Dexie relaxes by playing games after her streams followed by a snack or a nap right after.
I see you’ve been playing a variety of games the past few months, from survival horrors like Dead by Daylight to MOBAs like MLBB/Wild Rift. What have you been enjoying playing?
In the middle of my question, Dexie interrupted me to enthusiastically talk about Dead by Daylight. “Mas lively po kasi yung [stream]…pag yan linalaro ko kasi siyempre nakakakaba yung game and I really like horror games”. Dexie continued, “Kaya nalike ko yung Dead by Daylight, kasi yung killers and survivors dun are from the movies I’ve watched.”
She even went on to talk about her playthrough of The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan to say how she was on the verge of tears after almost finishing the game. “Horror po talaga siya and medyo gore, habol-habol, and puzzle din siya”, she added.
[pullquote]“Tinatawan nila ako pag nagugulat ako.”[/pullquote]
Dexie said she loves streaming her playthroughs because she feels her viewers are with her along the way. However, even Dexie and her viewers couldn’t stomach through Visage, hailed as one of the scariest games out there.
What has been your favorite game to play in quarantine?
Aside from Dead by Daylight, Dexie loves playing Apex Legends “kahit puro talo”. Having played Rules of Survival and Call of Duty before, Dexie enjoys playing Overwatch as well on her stream.
[pullquote]“Since ilang years na ako naglalaro ng 5v5 na game…medjo gusto ko magtry ng FPS”, she stated.[/pullquote]
What have you been doing to keep calm amidst the pandemic?
“Siyempre, eat lang always…usually games lang din po and watch anime. I never sleep when I watch anime.”
As a cosplayer herself, Dexie was sucked into the fantasy world of anime when she was in Grade School. When asked what her favorite anime is, she brought up the first anime she ever cosplayed Fairy Tail. Recently, she has been rewatching Violet Evergarden and anime with themes of vampires and guns – similar to her taste in video games.
What do you miss the most from pre-quarantine life?
”I want to get to know [the people at Tier One] more kasi mas gusto ko mas close ako sa co-workers ko and [to] collab with a lot of people.”
Of course, Dexie misses hanging out with her friends and since getting into Tier One, she hasn’t been able to bond with her co-workers. She then cheekily added, “And mageat po sa labas ng Samgyupsal!”. Guess everyone misses Korean barbecue.
Since you’re still young, are you still in school? Do you plan to go to college soon or are you pursuing streaming full time?
“I’m homeschooled. Right now, I’m in Grade 10…and [para] sa college kasi, I guess I want to do it sa ibang country.”
When asked where she wanted to study, Dexie said she wanted to study in Japan. Her love for anime and Japan has led to her studying the Japanese language. Dexie even already had a trip planned to Japan last April, but it got cancelled because of the pandemic.
You were already an actress before you started streaming. How do you think your skills there moved to streaming?
“I was an artist for ABS-CBN…super duper dami kong nagampanan na roles sa MMK, Once Upon A Time at dun ako naggrow sa pagiging artista, sa confidence ko, and how to talk on camera.”
Since streaming has grown into an industry, Dexie’s knowledge of how to act in front of a camera, which is basically what streaming is, and appealing to an audience is what has brought her so much acclaim.
What are your goals in the future? Since you’re already this far at such a young age.
[pullquote]“Siyempre, under Tier One, I want to grow more and knowing Ma’am Alodia, I want to be like her. Pero syempre, mas gusto ko in another path.”[/pullquote]
According to Dexie, Alodia has been her inspiration since grade school and influenced her to start cosplaying in the first place.
What are the challenges being in the streaming space as a young individual?
“Actually…yun nga po may times na kunyari magstrstream ako, kinakabahan ako [at] natatakot ako kasi sixteen years old ako and [a] girl? Usually po kasi pag babae…kapag [sa games] mas gusto po [na kalaro] yung lalake.”
Dexie opened up about the discrimination she receives almost everyday saying “Araw-araw meron pong dummy account na nagcocomment sa [stream] ko pero tinatawanan ko nalang”. She mentioned that she gets disrespected by viewers because of her young age, but she hopes that it’s done in a constructive manner.
Do you have any advice/message to your viewers?
“Sana you guys keep supporting me kahit medyo weird na stream ko, kahit nabibingi na kayo sa tingi ko. Lalo na I always play kabado-kabado games kaya wala talaga akong magagawa kundi sumigaw at mukha namang natutuwa [kayo] dun.”
“Sana di [kayo] magsawa sakin, mahaba pa lalakbayin natin”, since Dexie is still a young streamer on a meteoric rise. For those who want to be streamers, Dexie’s advice is to just go live on Omlet Arcade and to just stream because she might just end up raiding your stream when she sees it live.
Last of all, she joked to “stay negative” amidst the pandemic. Tune in to the next feature of Streamer Sundays coming in the following weeks.
