32nd SEA Games VALORANT ends with joint gold and bronze medals

The 32nd Southeast Asian Games VALORANT ended with joint gold and bronze medals after the conclusion of the controversial gold medal match between Indonesia and Singapore yesterday, May 10, 2023.

The joint gold medals were awarded to both grand finalists Indonesia and Singapore while the joint bronze medals were given to both the Philippines and Vietnam.

The decision was made after the grand finals match between Indonesia and Singapore was initially delayed and then eventually suspended due to Indonesia’s protest against Ingram “FREY” Tan’s Cypher camera placements in the second game of the series on Split. The series was already in favor of Singapore as they took Game 1 on Ascent 13-8 and was leading the scorelines in Split 10-4 before the match was delayed.

The Cypher camera placement has created a debate between the Southeast Asian VALORANT community, with one side arguing it was a bug exploit while the other saying it was perfectly fine within the rulebook.

Singapore’s Tidus “STYRON” Goh revealed through a TwitLonger the details surrounding what happened on the ground during the entire debacle. He also argued that the Cypher camera spots FREY used were not an exploit as it wasn’t included in the exploit list and therefore were legal.

“The rulebook states that as long as the camera is viewable and able to be destroyed by both teams it is legal, furthermore according to the rulebook, the penalty depends if the bug had an impact on the round,” STYRON stated in his TwitLonger. “The camera on 5-3 did not impact the round as it was broken almost immediately and [Indonesia] subsequently won the round,” he continued.

Prior to the final consensus of having joint medals, Indonesia initially forfeited as revealed in a report by APAC news organization Valo2Asia.

After it was announced that the 32nd SEA Games will instead give out joint medals in VALORANT, all the teams graciously accepted their respective medals, save for Singapore as they had an early flight back to their country which caused them to miss the awarding ceremonies.
