Which Teams are Playing?
There will be sixteen (16) teams fighting for that much-coveted Summoner’s Cup in the 2016 League of Legends World Championship.
What are They Playing for?
The Summoner’s Cup plus a ton of international pride and glory, of course! In addition to that is a prize pool of over $ 2, 000, 000 USD. Each team’s prize money is based on their performance in the event.
But wait, there’s more! Riot just announced that 25% of the revenue from the sales of Championship wards and skins will be added to the 2016 Worlds prize pool. The World Champion will also receive 25% of the revenue from the sales of their Championship skins once they are released. With all these additional prizes, I’m sure all teams are much more motivated to win the tournament.
What is the Tournament’s Format?
The 2016 League of Legends World Championship will be played out in two stages: group stage followed by a knockout stage.
In the group stage, all teams will fight in a double round robin, best of one (Bo1) matchup. This means that each team will have a total of six (6) games in which they will fight each team in their group twice. Eight (8) teams, the Top 1 and Top 2 of each group, will then advance to the knockout stage.
The tournament will then transition into a best of 5 (Bo5) single elimination bracket. Whoever survives this stage will be crowned 2016 World Champion.
