10 Things You Might Want to Add to your Gaming New Year’s Resolutions

It’s finally 2022 so you know what that means: it’s time to craft some new year’s resolutions.

I personally believe that starting the year with the intent to change for good is great for good karma. As such, here are 10 things I suggest for your personal new year’s resolutions:

1. Time to actually finish games

Have you finally finished the Hugo literary-winning game Hades? Still figuring out Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice? Beaten the Elite 4 from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl? Nada? Well, this is your sign for you to actually finish the games that you’ve ABANDONED. Don’t let them sit out anymore (collecting dust and cobwebs) and let the game credits finally roll.

2. Venture out from your comfort zone

Are you the type of gamer that only plays one genre? If so, then maybe it’s time for you to come out of thy comfort zone and play some new games. Love VALORANT? Try some rhythm games like Osu! (with the hopes of improving your reaction time and accuracy so that you can stop whiffing every time you try to clutch). Only have the fancy for RTS games such as StarCraft? Try the Sims franchise. Who knows you might just find yourself a new fave.

3. Be more physically active

Don’t forget to observe proper health protocols when you’re out!

We’ve all heard the saying “health is wealth,” and one step towards having a healthy lifestyle is to get some exercise. As such, for this new year, I urge you to finally stand up from that comfy gaming chair of yours and start sweating it out. Sound like a drag? Fret not as you can still get your heart pumping while playing video games. You’ve got a plethora of choices:

  • Bust out that old Xbox Kinect or Wii and play those old motion-sensing games such as the Just Dance series.
  • Hike, jog, or bike around your community while playing AR games (like Pokémon GO).
  • If they’re open again in your area, pay your local arcade a visit and play old classics such as Dance Dance Revolution.
  • Get buff while bottom fragging as you do one rep of push-ups, sit-ups, or whatever exercise you decide to do when you get killed over and over again during your Valorant games.

P.S. Just remember to observe proper protocols whenever you’re in public. The goal here is to not get sick remember? #Winks

4. Lessen your in-game purchases

How much IRL money have you spent for Primogems, VALORANT skins, MLBB skins, or Pokémon GO community day research tickets? A lot? Sheesh! I get it, sometimes it’s tempting to reward ourselves with in-game shop goodies after a day’s hard work. Regardless, you don’t really need that ugly Minima Operator nor that shiny new Lux chroma. Hopefully, your sense of adulting responsibilities (a.k.a. being financially responsible) triumphs over your splurging tendencies for 2022.

5. Stop treating online games as online dating apps

Yes, groups like this do exist.

Okay, despite the popularity of duo queueing in MLBB or CODM, and the recent rise of Discord and Facebook groups such as Discord Love and VALORANT Lambingan, I’m here to remind you that online games are NOT online dating apps! I’m not bitter (really), just hear me out.

People play games to unwind, relax, destress, and most importantly, have fun. Although people have indeed found love through gaming, a lot of people are just borderline harassing other players and it’s not cool at all (even illegal, to some extent). If you’re really looking for somebody to love, I suggest you actually go out, touch some grass, and either muster up the courage to ask your crush out or meet some new people.

Don’t go looking for love in your online gaming sessions. PERIOD.

6. Up your skill level

It’s never bad to keep improving, especially when you suck. Brutal honesty aside, games nowadays are designed to have high skill ceilings, and it’s the elite players that come remotely close to them. I’m not telling you to be part of the best of the best, rather, am telling you that you can strive towards their level as long you put in the grind. So instead of flaming your teammates, maybe it’s time for you to up your skill. Which reminds me…

7. Reduce toxicity

…that I should tell you that it’s time for you to be less toxic. Even if you argue it’s “always been part of the gaming experience,” cursing at your teammates when they’re not doing well isn’t good (and will never be for anyone). Instead, what you can do is encourage them, help them, and try to have fun. Who knows, maybe you guys can come back from a 9-3 deficit in VALORANT if you cheer your bottom-fragging teammate instead of flaming them.

8. Study up

Don’t abandon your academics just to play games. Be a responsible gamer and who knows you might just get a gaming scholarship. What’s that? You’re not a student anymore? Well, even if that’s the case, studying a game will lead to your eventual skill improvement (which circles back to item #6). Even in the pro scene, coaches and players watch VODs and study their matches in order to figure out mistakes and how to solve them. That’s how they improve. There are numerous ways to study which include…

9. Read more

… reading more. Knowledge is power and one way of attaining it is by reading a lot of stuff. Here in Esports Inquirer, you can read about a lot of stuff which includes (but is not limited to):

Whatever you need, we’re most likely gonna bring it to you. So feel free to read our articles!

10. Take a break

Have a break. have a… nope we’re not sponsored. You see, even the most hardcore gamers need rest. Not only will it give your body time to recuperate (your eyes will thank you), you’ll be in your most optimal condition to beat game bosses when you’re well-rested! So put down your controller, turn off your PC, and spend some time away from gaming. Play with your pets, hang out with your friends on Discord and stream a movie, read a book (or any of our features), or spend some quality time with your family.

Hopefully, you’ve picked some, if not all, of the suggestions and added them to your own new year’s resolution list. Afterall, as the year changed, we should also be open to change, especially the good kind. With that said, Happy New Year folks, and may you all have a prosperous 2022.
